Julia's Just Read

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth G Speare

Rating: 3 /5

Just My Thoughts:

Let me premise my thoughts with the acknowledgment that this book is set in the 1690's, but this book was hard to get into at first. Call me biased but when I get my hands on a good book, I am reading that in like 3-4 hours TOPS. That being said, this book took me 5 days to finish. It wasn't a bad story, but it just didn't have as intense of a story as I expected from a banned book. Maybe that is the point after all, since it followed a young lady named Kit who recently moved to New England from Barbados after her grandpa dies. The story opens with her experience aboard a boat set for Wethersfield, Connecticut (a known Puritan community) where her estranged Aunt lives with her family. Along the way, a family comes aboard and they immediately are suspicious of her because Kit reveals she can swim after she jumps in the water to save the daughter's dolly... BRUH imagine someone thinking you are a witch because you can swim LOL. Anywho as expected this Puritan lifestyle is a rather tough adjustment for Kit especially once she met the "witch of blackbird pond" aka Hannah, an elderly widow who is a Quaker (gasp). They bond from the start as Kit appreciates Hannah's kindness, but talk of Hannah being a witch starts a trial. While I am not going to give away what happens, I guess why I did come around to appreciate this book is because it reminds me how farfetched the rumor mill can take things and how dangerous the "witch trials" were for women in general. After all, all the witches killed were just women...
